ROCK HILL, S.C. — Winthrop gets a home playoff game Wednesday night when the No. 4 seed Eagles welcome No. 5 seed Longwood to Eagle Field in Rock Hill for a Big South men’s soccer tournament quarterfinal at 7 p.m.
The Eagles come in at 6-8-3 overall and 3-3-1 in league play. They earned the home date with a 2-1 win at USC Upstate in the regular-season finale, when Teo Jelaca broke a tie on a free kick in the 84th minute after a Juma Baden penalty had put Winthrop ahead.
Longwood, 8-7-1, already owns a win at Eagle Field this fall. The Lancers beat Winthrop 4-2 in Rock Hill on Oct. 17, with Brando Bedolla scoring twice and setting up another goal.
History still leans toward the home side. Winthrop holds a 14-3-2 edge in the series, and Winthrop has won seven of eight Big South quarterfinals played on its own field. Its only home defeat in that round came in 2024, the most recent time it hosted one.
Baden leads Winthrop with nine goals. A Winthrop or Longwood win sends that team into a Sunday, Nov. 8 semifinal against High Point, the tournament’s No. 1 seed.
