Winthrop University President Edward Serna’s Contract Extended
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – In a significant move, the Winthrop University Board of Trustees has granted President Edward Serna a five-year extension on his contract, keeping him at the helm of the institution until June 30, 2029. The contract renewal will come into effect from July 1, 2024.
Board’s Unanimous Decision
Following a unanimous vote by the board members, the announcement was revealed at the quarterly meeting on April 25, 2024. The decision reflects the board’s trust in Serna’s leadership abilities, recognizing his considerable contributions and influence on Winthrop University’s growth and success over his year and a half tenure.
Board Chair Glenn McCall expressed his satisfaction with Serna’s performance, highlighting that his appointment in February 2022 was based on his vast experience as a public university president and proven history of steering institutions through challenging times. Serna’s approach to strategic planning and data-informed decision-making, coupled with establishing influential partnerships, was instrumental in the decision to extend his contract.
Acknowledging Achievements
McCall applauded President Serna’s leadership, noting how he has spearheaded a team to notch significant milestones, aligned with the mission, vision, and values of Winthrop University. The board resolution indicated several areas where Serna’s impact has been particularly noteworthy.
Under his guidance, two university divisions have greatly excelled. The first being responsible for student retention rates and increased freshman and transfer enrollment, while the second division has worked to raise philanthropic gifts. Moreover, President Serna’s leadership was integral in leading the university through a strategic planning process, which produced a proactive and comprehensive roadmap for the future of Winthrop.

Beyond academic milestones, Serna has been commended for his efforts in community outreach, leading to reputable evaluations from both the Faculty Conference and the Staff Conference as well as the Council of Student Leaders. He has enhanced relationships with various municipal, county, and regional entities through a cooperative leadership style, thereby improveing the university’s community engagement and regional impact.

Contract Extension Details
It’s been clarified that the contract extension will not alter Serna’s current salary and benefits. However, both parties have agreed to a clause stipulating a three-year buyout period. In the event of Serna being recruited to another institution due to his success, the recruiting institution would have to cover up to three years of Serna’s state salary to buy out the contract. Likewise, the Board is committed to providing Serna with up to three years of his salary if the contract is terminated without any cause.
