Location
South Central sits in the downtown-to-southwest part of Rock Hill, centered around the Main Street/Caldwell Street grid and extending toward Oakland Avenue, Southern Street, and nearby blocks south of the core. It is about 0.1 mile from downtown Rock Hill at Main Street and Caldwell Street, with access to I-77 through the downtown exits farther west and south. Fewell Park is nearby, and Manchester Creek runs just south and east of the neighborhood area.
Character
The housing stock in South Central is mixed, with older single-family houses and smaller infill lots near downtown alongside some later additions and renovated properties. On the street, the area reads as an older in-town neighborhood: modest homes close to the road, mature tree cover, sidewalks in some blocks, and short blocks that make it easier to walk to nearby downtown businesses. History
South Central developed as part of Rock Hill’s older in-town residential fabric near the historic downtown and mill-era growth that shaped the city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area later saw the same cycles that affected much of central Rock Hill, including mid-century change, downtown decline, and more recent reinvestment around Main Street and nearby corridors.
